Picking an Ikea Dresser

My parents needed a bedroom dresser for their apartment and since they are renting, we wanted to spend as little as possible on a decent dresser that would be functional and also look good! After considering many different Ikea dressers for clothing storage, we settled on the Ikea Hemnes 8 drawer dresser. Out of the Hemnes color options, we picked white in order to perfectly blend into this nook!

Tips for Ikea Hemnes Assembly:

1) Utilize a large, open workspace if possible.

It will definitely help to have a larger open workspace to build the 8-drawer Hemnes, since there are a lot of parts and materials to organize. Tim built the dresser in the living room, since there wasn't as much room in the bedroom.

2) Lay out all the materials on the cardboard it comes in.

This helps to protect your floors if assembling on hardwood!

3) Tools Needed to Assemble Ikea Hemnes

Ikea will include all the tools you'll need to assemble the Hemnes dresser, except for a phillips head screwdriver and a hammer. We used the hammer to tap in the wooden dowels and nails.

A really handy hack for assembly that will make the build MUCH faster and easier is using a ratcheting screwdriver, which we use for ALL our furniture assembly projects. This is a worthy tool to have on hand for so many home projects!

Another handy tool to make the build process faster is a ratcheting socket wrench with a hex bit, instead of the allen wrench that comes with the Ikea materials.

Note: The Ikea directions will tell you to initially build it vertically on a specific side.

One person can build this, but generally would need two people when standing the dresser up and flipping it.

4) Attaching Dresser Backboard

When putting the back board on the dresser, first mark out the center of the dresser then use a piece of cardboard from the packing materials to draw a straight line. The reason for marking out the center of the dresser is so you know exactly where to hammer the nails into the middle beam.

5) Tips for Building the Ikea Hemnes Drawers

After building one drawer and seeing which hardware is needed, you can set aside and organize the rest of each drawer's hardware ahead of time to be efficient. After figuring out one drawer, the process to build each subsequent drawer goes much quicker.

We were pretty surprised to see that the sides of the drawer are actual real wood, not particle board. This was better quality than we expected!

How long did it take to assemble?

It took around 2 hours to build the dresser frame and another 1-2 hours to build the 8 drawers.

The dresser frame was assembled in the living room, where there was much more room to work, and then transferred to its final spot in the bedroom BEFORE drawers were placed in (so it's not too heavy).

Overall Impression and Review of Ikea Hemnes Dresser

After 6+ months of use, my parents still love the Hemnes and think it offers great value for the price! They were pleasantly surprised at how much of their clothes could comfortably fit in the large 8 drawer dresser and love how it fits perfectly in this nook. The overall dresser frame is sturdy, however the drawers are not as smooth as we'd hoped. Their only complaint is that one of the drawers doesn't close as well as it used to and sometimes needs to be forced in. The quality of the Hemnes is decent considering the price of $279 and definitely makes for a great option for a bedroom dresser at a low price point!
